Mathematics, Music and Art
EtudeX in E Minor
Composed by Emanuele Borgonovo, the piece is based on a series of canonical repetitions. In the first part, the descending theme played by the right hand is repeated in the next measure by the left hand. In the second part, the direction changes from descending to ascending, with the ascending notes of the left hand, repeated by right hand in the following measure. In the third part, the two series of canons cross each other, forming the symbol of the mathematical variable X.
EtudeX in E Minor was premiered by the internationally acclaimed pianist Maestro Roberto Plano on May 21, 2026, in his recital in Aula Magna of Bocconi University.
